New Boys’ Dorm Barbershop Will Keep Students Looking Fresh While Teaching New Skills

In this month’s HIS Nation post, guest blogger and HIS junior Slade (entering senior year as of the time of publishing) shares the impact of the new boy’s dorm barber shop that is currently under construction. Slade is working during the summer as our grounds assistant, and during the later part of the 2022/23 school year, he worked as our content coordinator assistant.

Slade and a few other students currently go to a barber shop in town. The new boys’ dorm barber shop will help student save on costs and time while teaching them new skills.

At the beginning of the school year, the Boy’s dorm started raising money to build a barbershop for the dorm. Because the boys happen to stay at the school most of the year, they rarely have time to cut their hair. Because of this, some kids ask the deans to give them haircuts or ask a faculty member to take them to go get a haircut in town. Though going to town is a choice, some kids can’t because it costs money.

Adrian Wiles, the assistant dean, can cut hair but with the lack of time from his duties as a dean and not having a dedicated space for cutting hair, it makes him have a little less practice. So with the barbershop, the deans will have a certain time to cut hair and the boys will not have to worry about paying for it or when the next time they’ll get a haircut.

The Barbershop is teaching students another way to make a source of income.

I personally think this is a big impact on our dorm life and bonding of the boys with staff. Because, with the barber shop the deans want to go to school to learn how to cut hair better and to teach boys who want to learn how to cut hair. With this skill it shows us another job that we can go to work at. HIS does not require kids to cut their hair, but some like to keep their hair groomed and styled.
